When the HP LaserJet IIISi is selected as the printer in the Printer Setup window, the HPPCL5A Printer Driver Version 3.77 provides support for these features. Additional Internal Scalable Typefaces - When the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIISi printer is selected, support for scalable typefaces Zapf Dingbats, CG Times, Univers, and Univers Condensed in medium, bold, italic and bold italic treatments is available. Zapf Dingbats is available in the Series 100, Series 200, Series 300, PS, and Ventura Screen symbol sets. The other scalable typefaces are available in the Windows symbol set. From the Printer Setup window you will be able to set the following options: Memory Selection up to 17 Megabytes - The available selections take in to account all of the possible memory configurations using 1 Megabyte and 4 Megabyte SIMMS. Click on Options in the Printer Setup window to access the following options: Output Bin Selection - The Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIISi has two output bins, upper and lower. Job Separation - Job separation is produced by a shift of the rollers controlled by a PCL command. Job Separation is either on or off allowing each printout to be offset from the previous printout. Notes: International C5 envelope size is not supported on the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIISi Printer. The duplex option will be available from the Options Box of the Printer Setup window, but will not work on the printer unless the duplexing option is installed. Commands are appended to the beginning of every file to change the printer into PCL mode. Support for the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIIP - When the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIIP is selected as the Printer in the Printer Setup window, the driver supplies support for the LaserJet IIIP's internal fonts and scalable typefaces including CG Times and Univers in medium, italic, bold and bold italic treatments. CG Times and Univers are available in the Windows symbol set. Also, dual bin support is available for those people who purchase the optional paper tray. Hewlett-Packard Font Installer - Scalable typefaces and bitmapped fonts can now be installed for use in both Windows 3.0 and your Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III family printer. The Hewlett-Packard font installer installs typefaces and fonts from the following file types: .PCM Printer Cartridge Metrics file. This file is created by the cartridge vendor. PCM files are used for scalable and bitmapped cartridges that are not supported by the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III printer driver. GLUE.TXT This file contains information for all font products you install with AutoFont Support. Soft fonts and cartridges, bitmapped and scalable can be installed from the "glue.txt" file. When prompted by the HP Font Installer for the drive\directory from where you want to add fonts, input the drive\directory where your "glue.txt" file is located (default directory for HP's AutoFont program and for Type Director is C:\AUTOFONT). The HP Font Installer reads the "glue.txt" file and displays a list of the typefaces that have been installed with AutoFont support. When you add typeface(s), the HP Font Installer creates a .PFM file for soft fonts and a .PCM for cartridge fonts from the AutoFont .TFM files. The HP Font Installer installs the .PFM and .PCM files into Windows 3.0 for access by the printer driver. .SFP Bitmapped soft font in portrait orientation. .SFL Bitmapped soft font in landscape orientation. AutoFont Support - AutoFont support incorporated into the Hewlett-Packard font installer allows the installation of scalable typeface cartridges, scalable soft fonts, bitmapped font cartridges and bitmapped soft fonts into Windows 3.0 without first acquiring a Windows 3.0 metric file. AutoFont support works by creating the Windows 3.0 metrics files from the .TFM files installed through AutoFont. ************************************************************************** HPPCL5A PRINTER DRIVER ENHANCEMENTS ************************************************************************** Enhancements to the HPPCL5A Printer Driver include: * Print Model Improvement * New and Improved Gray Scale Printing * Font Downloading Optimizations Print Model Improvement - The print model feature has been improved to include printing black and white text over the top of other text and graphic images instead of only on black rectangles. New and Improved Gray Scale Printing - The gray scale option has been expanded to include optimal printing of scanned images. There are three choices in the Gray Scale dialog box in the Printer Setup screen for printing gray scale graphics: Photographic Images, Line Art Images, and HP ScanJet Images. Photographic Images replaces the Gray Scale Graphics On selection supported in Version 3.61 of the HPPCL5A driver. This method uses an 8 bit by 8 bit super pixel to emulate 60 levels of gray. This is up from 32 levels of gray supported in the previous version of the driver. For improved photographic appearance, select Photographic Images. Your images will have smooth, soft looking contrasts between shades of gray. Images originally designed with color will print better also. Line Art Images replaces the Gray Scale Graphics Off selection supported in Version 3.61 of the HPPCL5A driver. This method uses patterns to emulate 32 levels of gray. It has been improved from previous versions of the driver by supporting 32 new hand-tuned patterned images. The benefits of this method is that is has fewer artifacts and a better balance of gray tones than the old method, yet all of the detail is preserved. Use this method for images that have a "line draw" look such as clip art. HP ScanJet Images is a new option for printing gray scale graphics. This method uses a variation of the 8 bit by 8 bit super pixel used in the Photographic Images method. The HP ScanJet Images option is specially tuned for scanned images from an HP ScanJet to give exceptional quality and clarity to the printed images. You may want to print your graphic images from more than one of the Gray Scale printing methods. Only you can decide which method creates the best output for your picture. Font Downloading Optimizations - The HPPCL5A printer driver now downloads individual characters of a symbol set to the printer as they are referenced, rather than sending the entire symbol set at one time. ************************************************************************** USER HINTS ************************************************************************** On-line help files are included for the HPPCL5A printer driver and the HP font installer screens.
